In this video you learn about botines de charol, gamuza, piel, proper care techniques and which one is the best for your mariachi.

Types of Botines

The three different type of botines commonly used for mariachi are:

  • Leather (piel) with a matte finish
  • Charol or Patent Leather, which has the plastic style finish
  • Gamuza or Suede which is the velvety finish

Our Favorite brand is Botin La Barca due to their high quality and durability. They are also the proud sponsor of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan!

Botines de Charol

The Charol botin is my personal favorite because its not only elegant and durable, but it is also the easiest one to take care of. The Botin Charol La Barca is one of the most common balanced brands when it comes to comfort, durability and price. The price is amazing for the durability that it provides, specially when compared to other well known brands that lack the quality assurance of La Barca but only a minimal price difference.

There are other brands like Falcon (which does present some quality and consistency issues) or el Canelo, which is one of the best brands in Mexico but comes at double the cost.

The fantastic thing about the Charol botines is their ease of maintenance. Gone are the long and multiple polishing session that the regular leather boots take. Just grab a microfiber (or a napkin even) wet it slightly and clean them to leave them looking good as new. If you have some light scuffing hand lotion and a microsuede rag usually do the trick.

These are great for student groups, and professionals that gig every weekend. The rubber soles help to keep your feet warm in the winter even during rainy days.
