Welcome to Mariachi Clothing Company!! Now, one of the first things that you will realize is that we are called clothing company, but we have a lot instruments and accessories that are not clothing items and might wonder, why we have this name.
Our journey began roughly 12 years ago, when I started to look for t-shirts that reflected my love for mariachi. I started looking online, and looking, and looking…and nothing. There was no one selling mariachi themed t-shirts.
If I liked Jazz, I could find hundreds of options of t-shirts with faces of famous artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, etc. For Rock searches, the search results were in the thousands of products found. Since there were no options for a mariachi lover I decided to start making my own.
I drew up some designs and then sent them to one of the best graphic designers in Tijuana and had him turn my ideas into real and beautiful designs that were ready to print into t-shirts.
Our first designs were the Charritos, American Charro, Mariachi star wars, the baseball mariachi and the mariachi surfer (at the time, me and a lot of our friends would go surfing and we wanted something that represented us, the store, and most importantly our love for San Diego).
After we got the designs I decided to start looking for ways and places to share our new products and we participated in a mariachi conference in Chula Vista, and we also went to the mariachi conference in San Jose. We almost sold out completely and placed an order for another print run but I wanted to share them not just with mariachis, but anyone that loved mariachi music as much as I did, so I made a website. Since I also had a lot of problems with finding guitarron strings in the US, I decided to add the Selmer Guitarron strings from Mexico City and posted them on the site.
Then nothing happened…and nothing and nothing. I knew nothing about making websites or marketing and selling online (still don’t but now I’m learning) so I just let the website sit there and every few months we would get an order for t-shirts, or for guitarron strings, but for me it was never a priority to do much with it. After a couple of years someone found our website and asked if we had botonaduras and trajes (since our name kind of implied that we did) so I decided to add that ( I had a fantastic botonadura maker in Guadalajara and his quality was and still is a lot higher and at a better price than anything found online at the moment). Then the site sat abandoned for years bringing in a sale here and there every few months. During that time frame I made a few more designs and continued going to conferences selling t-shirts and strings. The mariachi equation t-shirt was born, and people would start asking for more things. Botines, moños, sombreros, earrings, belts, different types of botonaduras and all the gamut of instruments that are needed for the different programs.
A few years later, I realized that I was having some alarming problems as an educator, which included finding reliable sources that offered reasonable prices and high quality products. My district that I work for had issues finding vihuelas and guitarrones, and ended up buying chinese instruments. Unfortunately those instruents were made of plywood and were virtually unusable. With that I started to travel to Mexico to look for luthiers that could make instruments that were not only beautiful and resonant, but also tailor made for students to ensure our client’s budget doesn’t get wasted on instruments that aren’t playable. Our students deserve better than that. Little by little we grew and started adding more products to our selection.
Throughout our journey, we have been invited to participate in the Tucson International Mariachi Conference, and we have been a proud sponsor of their Mariachi Canta singing competition two years in a row. We’ve also donated instruments for fundraisers for programs in Texas and are currently working on a long term plan to donate instruments and fund free instruction for students in need all over Mexico.
We are passionate about Mariachi, and we are passionate about sharing our love for the music with the world.
Thank you for visiting our site. Please share us and help us spread the love of the music that we live for, so that we can share it with love, passion and dignity.
